Is Your Baby's Colic Actually a Nervous System Problem?

What Every Parent Needs to Know

You've fed them. Changed them. Rocked them. Walked the floors at 2am. And still — your baby won't stop crying.

If this sounds like your life right now, first — you're not alone. Colic affects roughly 1 in 5 babies, and for the parents living through it, the endless crying, the arching back, and the sleepless nights are completely exhausting. Most parents are told the same thing: "They'll grow out of it."

But what if there's an actual reason your baby is so uncomfortable? And more importantly — what if there's something gentle and safe you can do about it?

At Heal Within Chiropractic in Schaumburg, this is one of the most common concerns we see — and one of the most rewarding to help.

What Is Colic, Really?

Colic is typically defined by the "Rule of 3s" — crying for more than 3 hours a day, more than 3 days a week, for more than 3 weeks in an otherwise healthy baby. But that definition only tells you what it looks like, not what's causing it.

For years, colic was treated as a digestive issue — gas, reflux, food sensitivities. And while those factors can play a role, they are often the symptom, not the source.

The source, in many cases, is the nervous system.

The Real Root Cause: A Stressed Nervous System

Your baby's nervous system controls everything — digestion, sleep, heart rate, immune function, and the ability to calm down after stress. It operates on a two-mode system:

Sympathetic mode — fight or flight. High alert. Stressed.

Parasympathetic mode — rest and digest. Calm. Settled.

A healthy nervous system shifts naturally between these two states. But when a baby's nervous system gets stuck in sympathetic overdrive — fight or flight — everything breaks down. Digestion slows. Sleep becomes impossible. The baby can't self-soothe. Nothing seems to calm them down.

This is what's happening in most colicky babies. Their nervous system is stuck, and their body is telling you about it the only way it knows how — by crying.

How Does This Happen? The Birth Connection

Birth is one of the most physically demanding events a human body ever goes through — and that includes your baby.

Even in an uncomplicated delivery, the forces placed on a newborn's neck and spine during labor are significant. In assisted or complicated deliveries — forceps, vacuum extraction, prolonged labor, C-section — those forces are even greater. That physical stress concentrates in the upper cervical spine, the region right at the base of the skull.

Running directly through that region is one of the most important nerves in the body: the vagus nerve.

The Vagus Nerve — Your Baby's Master Regulator

The vagus nerve is the longest cranial nerve in the body. It travels from the brainstem down through the neck and into every major organ — the heart, the lungs, the stomach, the intestines. It is the primary driver of the parasympathetic nervous system — the "rest and digest" state your baby needs to be calm and comfortable.

When the vagus nerve is functioning well, your baby can:

Digest comfortably and pass gas easily

Latch and feed with ease

Fall asleep and stay asleep

Self-soothe after stress

When the vagus nerve is under stress due to tension in the upper cervical spine, all of those functions are compromised. The result looks a lot like colic.

Signs the Nervous System May Be Involved

Parents often notice these patterns before they ever connect them to the spine or nervous system. Here's what to look for:

Physical signs:

Baby consistently turns their head to one side and resists going the other way

Frequent back arching, especially during crying or feeding

Strong preference for being held in certain positions

Jaw tension or difficulty latching on one or both sides

Firm, tense abdomen

Behavioral signs:

Inconsolable crying for hours at a time

Difficulty settling even when fed, changed, and held

Easily startled or hypersensitive to touch, light, or sound

Waking frequently and unable to stay asleep

Digestive signs:

Chronic gas, bloating, or constipation

Frequent spitting up or reflux

Straining during bowel movements

Discomfort during or after feeding

If several of these sound familiar, there's a good chance the nervous system is at the root of it. And that's exactly what we look for at Heal Within Chiropractic.

How Gentle Chiropractic Care Helps

Pediatric chiropractic care for infants is nothing like the adjustments you may have experienced as an adult. There is no twisting, no cracking, no forceful manipulation. The pressure used is extremely light and specific — often described as the same gentle pressure you'd use to test the ripeness of a peach.

The goal is simple: identify and gently release areas of tension and restriction in the spine — particularly the upper cervical region — that are putting stress on the nervous system. When that tension is released, the vagus nerve can function properly, and the nervous system can shift out of fight-or-flight mode.

At Heal Within Chiropractic, Dr. Desiree Lombos specializes in gentle, specific care for infants and children. Every visit starts with a thorough evaluation so we understand exactly what your baby's body needs — nothing more, nothing less.

What Parents Typically Notice First

Babies respond to chiropractic care faster than any other population. Their nervous systems are highly adaptable, and when the interference is removed, changes can happen quickly.

Most parents begin noticing improvements within the first few visits:

Baby settling more easily after feeds

Longer, more restful sleep stretches

Reduced crying episodes

Improved latch and feeding comfort

More relaxed, content periods during the day

As care continues and the nervous system stabilizes, digestion, bowel regularity, and overall temperament continue to improve.

You Are Not Overreacting — And You Don't Have to Wait

One of the hardest parts of having a colicky baby is being told it's normal. That you just have to wait it out. That nothing is wrong.

Your instincts as a parent are telling you something different. And they're right.

Your baby isn't broken. They're not just a "difficult" baby. Their nervous system is under stress, and their body is communicating that the only way it can.

The good news is that stress can be addressed — gently, safely, and effectively.

If your baby has been struggling with colic, excessive crying, poor sleep, feeding difficulty, or digestive discomfort — and nothing has given you lasting relief — this is a great time to come in and get it checked out.

At Heal Within Chiropractic, we take the time to listen, evaluate, and create a care plan that's specific to your baby. We want you to feel informed, comfortable, and confident — not rushed or overwhelmed.

Your baby deserves to be comfortable. And you deserve to enjoy this season.
